St Andrews Duathlon – 30/09/18

st a 2

9 Valiant EUTriathletes were up before the break of dawn this morning to cross over the Forth and conquer the Kingdom of Fife.

With our steeds ready in transition we lined up at the start line, warmed up and ready to go. There, we commenced the EUTri chant and, after Harry’s quick toilet break, the race began.

A mass start meant the pack stayed together for a good 5 seconds after which Jack NichollsMax Phillips and Harry McCaughey sprinted off into the distance. The long and winding run route left lots of opportunity of high fives and encouragements along the way. The local Students cheered from their accommodation blocks wishing deep down that they were Edinburgh University Students.

Jack arrived in transition in 5th place and flew onto the bike, the rest of the team following close behind.

With the first descent came the first victim of the race with Max’s bike allowing him only to use his top gear (RIP Max’s legs). Confusion was caused when two stray racers chose to keep the race interesting by commencing the loop the other way around. But this did not phase our hardy Triathletes who continued to provide fierce competition across the field. Second casualty: Miriam’s saddle, providing much discomfort (RIP Miriam’s Backside).

All hopes of sprinting the second run soon faded as we leapt off our bikes. The final run was met by the last of the hugely motivating marshals and fantastic blasting tunes from UStATri as we crossed the finish line.
