As a member of the squad you will have the opportunity to complete a minimum of:
- 4 coached swims,
- 3 runs,
- 3 cycles,
- 2 strength and conditioning sessions per week.
Any of the sessions that are uncoached will have session plans provided. There will also be plenty opportunity for you to take part in unofficial squad sessions outside these.
The squad’s head coach, Dechlan Wilson has vast triathlon coaching experience and was British Triathlon’s Young Coach of the Year in 2011. Coach, Linda McLean has even more experience coaching triathlon, she’s Level 3 qualified and has been coaching the national performance programme for 15 years.
Edinburgh is an excellent location for training, with brilliant riding within 6 miles of the city centre. There are 2 running tracks and numerous pools in the city for which top athletes can apply to get £1 entry. Edinburgh also has excellent running routes, with the Pentlands just a short ride away. As well as being a performance squad with a good focus on training, enjoyment is key and the squad encourages athletes to get involved in club socials.
The squad will have 2 subsidised trips down to BUCS, which athletes are expected to attend. The squad has achieved 4th position at BUCS Standard Distance Triathlon 2016 & 2014, and has athletes that have competed in the British Super Series and in European Cups/ Age Group Championships.
There is also the opportunity for athletes to apply to the University to get on the individual performance programme, where they have the opportunity to get coached strength and conditioning sessions, physio support and access to nutritional advice.
As a university squad, your priorities will be taken into account, and there is a lot of flexibility and support for your education, so this squad should not affect your studies.
